Monday – April 22
Hagel visits Israel
US defence secretary Chuck Hagel makes his first visit to Israel. He is expected to meet new Israeli defence minister Moshe Ya'alon, to discuss security and strategic relations (to April 23).
Western Sahara debate
The UN Security Council meets in New York with an agenda including consultations on the UN mission for a referendum in Western Sahara. A settlement plan provides a referendum in which Western Saharan people choose between independence and integration with Morocco.
Meteors peak
A Lyrid meteor shower is expected to peak, with about 10 to 15 meteors an hour. The shower, in the constellation Lyra, rises in the northeast sky and should last until April 25.
Waste technologies
The North American Waste-to-Energy Conference at Fort Myers, Florida, focuses on municipal waste-to-energy projects and combustion engineering science (to April 25).
Shanghai car show
Auto Shanghai 2013 is at the New China International Exhibition Centre, Shanghai (to April 29). The 2011 show attracted 1,700 exhibitors.
Latin rhythms
The Billboard Latin Music Conference and Awards take place in Miami. It is for artists, record label executives, brand marketers, national radio programmers, producers and digital music executives.
MI5 chief starts work
Andrew Parker, the new director-general of Britain's domestic security service MI5, is to assume his role. Mr Parker, the current deputy, will take over from the outgoing head, Sir Jonathan Evans, who will leave having spent 33 years with the security service.
Foreign affairs agenda
The EU Foreign Affairs Council meets in Luxembourg (to April 23) when it will discuss developments in Syria and Lebanon.
Airport trading show
The ACI Europe Airport Trading Conference and Exhibition in Hamburg, Germany, attracts over 400 senior executives from airports, retailers, planners, suppliers, and enterprises concerned with revenue development (to April 24).

Thatcher biography
'Not for Turning', the first volume of Charles Moore's authorised biography of Baroness Thatcher, is published. The author is completing the concluding volume 'Herself Alone'.
Tons of Indian style
Auction house Bonhams sells a carved granite temple step featuring lions, horses, elephants, birds and Brahim cows which was found in the garden of a Devon bungalow. It is expected to sell for £30,000.
Arab fiction prize
The International Prize for Arabic Fiction is presented on the eve of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (to April 29).
Peru economic forum
The World Economic Forum holds its Latin America conference in Lima, Peru (to April 25). The event brings together 500 leaders.
Wednesday – April 24
Pocket globe auctioned
Auction house Christie's holds a travel, science and natural history auction which includes a rare pocket globe, measuring 7cm in diameter. The Dutch globe by Johannes Deur is from about 1720.
General strike call
The TUC's general council is to discuss whether British unions call a general strike over government cuts and pension issues. Action has been supported by the two biggest unions.
Security showcase
Counter Terror Expo takes place at Olympia, London (to April 25). Visitors from government, military, law enforcement, intelligence and private sector organisations are expected.
Asean summit
The Asean summit will take place in Brunei (to April 25). Leaders from the 10 member countries are due to attend, as well as partner countries such as China, Japan and Korea.

Lunar eclipse
A partial lunar eclipse, the first this year, is expected in southern Virgo about 120 east of Spica.
Double helix anniversary
Today marks the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick and the 10th anniversary of the first sequencing of the human genome.
Hollande in China
French president François Hollande visits China (to April 26), where he meets president Xi Jinping.
Paralympic track and field
An International Paralympic Committee Athletics Grand Prix takes place in São Paolo, Brazil. The Loterias Caixa Brazilian Athletics Open Championship is part of a series of six races.

Worker mobility
The European Commission adopts a directive to facilitate the free movement of workers in the EU by preventing discrimination and reducing unfair practices faced by migrant workers.
Saturday – April 27
Iceland goes to the polls
A parliamentary election takes place in Iceland. The country is likely to conclude negotiations with the European Union about membership afterwards.
Sunday – April 28
The Bafta Television Craft Awards are presented at The Brewery, London. BBC Two's Parade's End leads nominations.
