US economy adds 169,000 jobs in August
 
The US economy created 169,000 jobs last month, up from the 162,000 tally for July. Economists had forecast a gain of 180,000. The unemployment rate was at 7.3 per cent in August compared with 7.4 per cent in July.

Under outgoing chairman Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve has closely tied future monetary policy to the health of the labour market.

The pace of US jobs growth has picked up this year, averaging 196,000 a month. That compares to a monthly average of 189,000 last year.
